| Nicola Griffith Jan 8 | Mark Tiedemann, a writer and friend we've known for many years, posted this photo at the weekend. It was taken in November in Kansas City, at the mass autographing session at World Fantasy Con. It took me by surprise—I hadn't known he was taking it; I hadn't seen the photo before he posted it—and for a split second I didn't like it. I thought I looked old and tired in an old and ugly hotel basement room. Then I grinned: I am old! I was tired! (Weeks of book tour will do that to a person.) The room was horrible (but the people were lovely)! But I still look like me, that very particular juxtaposition of fair-going-grey dyke haircut, ancient black leather jacket and black wheelchair, the beer and the pens, and the obvious engagement with whoever I'm talking to—very probably a reader. This is who I am. It may not be the most beautiful photograph of me but it's nonetheless a remarkably true portrait. And that's a gift. | | | | You can also reply to this email to leave a comment. | | | | |
