| Malva and Benjamin January 27 | Benjamin has long desired to experience the cog railroad that winds its way up Pike's Peak. I remember riding these rails as a child myself, marveling that the line was so old – the first cog trains began chugging up the mountain in 1891. The 9-mile journey took us past waterfalls, craggy rock formations, and golden aspen groves, providing magnificent views. We even saw a bighorn sheep and numerous flocks of arctic ravens. On our way through the nearby town of Manitou, we stopped by various soda springs bubbling from deep within the earth, filling our camping bottles with the tasty sparkling water. Bracketing our train trip were several visits to the stunning rock formations in neighboring Garden of the Gods, at different times of day, with shifting light and shadows. Most dramatic were the minutes just before sundown – a golden/red flaming show of sandstone colors! | | | | | You can also reply to this email to leave a comment. | | | | |
