Varsity hockey player Matt Brown suffered a severe injury during the team's game against Weymouth at Pilgrim Arena in Hingham.
According to Coach Bill Clifford, the sophomore was attempting to retrieve the puck behind the net when he collided with players from both teams. As a result, Brown lost his balance and struck his head against the plexiglass.
Describing the incident as a "freak accident," Clifford emphasized that it was not a malicious or intentional act. Brown was subsequently transported by ambulance to South Shore Hospital, initially experiencing no sensation in his legs. Later, he was transferred to Children's Hospital.
As of now, Brown remains in the Intensive Care Unit at Children's Hospital, where doctors are monitoring his condition while waiting for swelling from the injury to subside. The hospital's public affairs office has reported that Brown is in serious condition.
Friends of Brown established a Facebook page, "PRAY FOR MATT BROWN #3," to show support and keep everyone informed about his progress. According to the page, Brown is scheduled for surgery on Wednesday.
Additionally, a Children's Hospital page, "WeLoveNumber3," has been created, featuring photos, updates, and well-wishes for Brown.
In a recent update, Brown's aunt, Laura Brown, informed the Norwood Transcript and Bulletin that he is stable and will undergo surgery tomorrow. She explained, "At this point, he'll be operated on tomorrow morning to stabilize the bones in his neck. The surgery will aid in recovery by keeping the broken bones in place."
A prayer Mass was held this morning for Brown at St. Catherine's, where the community showed overwhelming concern and support, filling the church to capacity. Laura Brown expressed gratitude for the widespread care and concern demonstrated by people during this challenging time.
