Alice and Joe have only known each other a year, but they're expecting a baby any day now, so they've decided to move out of London, where there's a lot of crime, to a cute village in the country, which feels much safer. As they're both a bit flaky, plus the move has taken up a lot of brain power and time recently, it's only on their first day in the new village that they finally attend a prenatal class. Where a woman actually gives birth a tad bit early. And when the paramedics arrive and Alice lets them in to the shop downstairs from the class, they're confused, because surely they're here for the dead guy in the shop, no?
Alice and her new friend Poppy are both on maternity leave but not yet given birth so they're bored, and also Poppy's wife Lin is considered a suspect by the homicide detective. Although Alice doesn't seem to be cottoning on to the fact that Joe isn't telling her everything, they decide they should investigate the suspicious death. Mostly because of the boredom. And because it's kind of fun.
And this is no ordinary rural English village. There's a commune with yurts and all the shops in town are very hippy-dippy. And the commune seems to be somehow involved. And there was a death in town of a young woman ten years ago that no one wants to talk about, which makes it seems suspiciously related to this recent possible murder. And also if Alice is off investigating, she doesn't have to deal with the fact that their bed doesn't fit upstairs so they're still sleeping on an inflatable mattress, her dog Helen is wildly out of control, and she and Joe don't actually know each other all that well yet. It's a lot easier to just focus on detectiving!
This is a super fun book, very pleasant and light despite the murder(s). It's a fast read and I ripped through it in a couple of days. I really had to convince myself to put it away and go to sleep at night as I wanted to just keep reading until I was done despite the hour.
This book is published by Minotaur, a division of Macmillan, my employer.
