On Christmas Eve morning, the sleeper train to the Scottish Highlands derails. While stuck on the tracks, a killer strikes and starts picking off passengers one by one. Former detective Roz Parker is on the train, traveling to see her daughter, but she will have one more case to solve before she gets there.
Honestly, this book was a lot slower than I thought it would be. I thought it would be more of a thriller, with a sense of urgency of what would happen, but it never felt like that. I supposed I should have realized that this book is a take on Murder on the Orient Express, but I thought at least something exciting would happen.
This is a locked room mystery with lots of red herrings and false leads. I did enjoy trying to figure out who the killer was and the reveal caught me off guard. I liked Roz a lot and her detective skills were spot on.
Unfortunately, I felt like Roz was really the only character who was fleshed out. There were eighteen passengers on the train and I kept getting people confused. I couldn't remember who was who with the university students and there were a couple of women who I kept forgetting their names.
Additionally, this book deals with a lot of dark issues that could be triggering for some people. There is heavy discussion of rape, domestic violence, and sexual assault. It almost makes the book too serious to be considered a cozy mystery or Christmas book.
This book was interesting but it wasn't really what I had hoped it would be.
