What a surprise came to us this week! Our Governor distributed bonuses for all educators. Paraprofessionals included (that's me). So I splurged with a bit of it and bought 4 new books, Merry Christmas to me!
I got I got 2 NEW theology books and 2 non-fiction historical narratives. James Durham is a Scottish Covenanter from 1600s but Reformation Heritage Books has updated the language and reissued his book. Ward McAllister is the same Ward McAllister featured in The Gilded Age tv series. He wrote a book about his life and given his influence with 'THE Mrs Astor' during the height of the gilded age, I got curious about the guy. The Grann book, yes, I obtained a copy from the Library, but I probably won't finish it in the 2 weeks allotted. It's a new book so I can't renew it. It drives me crazy to have a clock ticking on a book I am reading, so I just bought the book new from Amazon and got it over with.
I like to go to the vintage store after school on Fridays sometimes. it's a relaxing buffer between the hectic pace at school and home. It's like being at a museum, looking at beautiful furniture, art, and other well made items, in a relaxing atmosphere. Plus, there are deals, many deals.
There was a half off sale on Christmas items and a $5 fill-a-bag of books sale too. OK, I'm so there.
Left to right: I needed a salad bowl, and the glass one was a perfect size. Christmas items; silver chain and a glowing battery operated candle. I needed some forks and a tablespoon. I got 7 books (2 aren't photographed because they are gifts). Cool mug with a wooden handle. And a tall lamp with shade for my classroom. Total: $17.50. The books are:
The One Year After is a follow-up to Forschen's One Second After, a thrilling and chilling presentation of a likely scenario in America starting one second after an Electro-Magnetic Pulse wipes out all electronics and electricity in the US. This follow up is supposed to be good.
Wallace Markfield is known for this, his first book, To an Early Grave. He was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1965 after its publication. He is a comic writer and the book is supposed to be funny. I liked the cover art. It's a first edition too. It was also a Finalist in 1965 in the National Book Awards for Fiction. A reviewer says the book is "a highly polished comic gem."
The Jill Ker Conway book is an autobiography of this Aussie sheep farming girl who eventually made it to America and became president of Smith College. Same with Julia Child, who revolutionized cooking for American wives and mothers. Julia didn't know French, or how to cook, when she went to Paris and enrolled in Cordon Bleu cooking classes, but away she went, and thru perseverance and grit made it to the top.
I was familiar with the Erskine Caldwell. I knew God's Little Acre was a movie also. In looking up God's Little Acre it seems that it was banned, and an obscenity trial occurred over it. It was considered pornographic 100 years ago. I might have to throw this one out without reading it. It's not a first edition. I'll see. It's about a farmer in Georgia.
The mug is a $60 mug from Coffeify. I got it for $1.
Not bad for $17.50. Some gifts, some functional items, and some entertainment. What have you found lately?
