I have something a little different for you today... something seasonally appropriate and important to anyone who has a book-loving loved one with Alzheimers or dementia:
Lilac Arch Press have released a range of Hi-Lo books specially aimed at older people suffering from memory issues and/or cognitive impairment, including a set of Christmas novels.
Today I am spotlighting one in particular - A Ruby Red Christmas by Delilah Hall - but I will also give you a bit of general information and the links so that you can check the books out for yourself and even purchase one or two.
In a Ruby Red Christmas, Delilah Hall crafts a heartfelt tale of love that defies time. In a story set in both the past and the present, the reader gets to unravel the love story of Lucy and John and what pulled them apart.
Once deeply in love. Then separated by the twists and turns of life, each of them carries with them a lifetime of experiences. Each of them has had a family and a full life that was happy. But what about those unfulfilled dreams they'd shared so many years ago?
When their paths cross unexpectedly, all those memories come back. We get to see how two people pulled apart can find each other again, and what that looks like in the present.
One of our hi-lo (high interest/low reading level) series for older adults. While these heart-warming tales can be enjoyed by anyone, they are specially crafted for people experiencing cognitive impairment such as dementia. Short sentences, paragraphs, and chapters make for a pleasant reading experience.
People may enjoy these books on their own, with a loved one, or in a group setting. Each book contains illustrations throughout. After each chapter, there are general discussion questions to encourage engagement and connection.
And here is author Delilah Hall, to tell us about her book in her own words:
Recently, I have celebrated another release! A Ruby Red Christmas.
And while this is a little out of my comfort zone when it comes to the books I normally publish, this was a very personal project for me. Several years ago, my grandmother was diagnosed with Alzheimers, and during the course of that time my parents and I have taken active roles in caring for her and taking an active role in managing her Alzheimers.
Reading can be a wonderful activity for those with memory loss or those who struggle with Alzheimers- and can be a wonderful way to stimulate your brain to help combat those things. Research determined that adults in their 70s who engaged in mentally intense hobbies, such as reading, from ages 20-60 are less likely to develop Alzheimer's disease.
Because we had a hard time finding books that were the right fit, I was excited to see Lilac Arch Press's line that is designed for those with memory issues- and when I saw they had an open call for submissions, I knew that I wanted to contribute to them.
Because, how cool is it that my grandma gets to read my book?
I wrote A Ruby Red Christmas last summer and let me tell you, there is just something that feels wrong about listening to Christmas music in the middle of July. But I had to get in the mood somehow. And while it might have felt weird to have a craving for turkey and stuffing in the middle of summer, it paid off and I am so excited to be able to gift this to my grandma for the holidays.
I wanted A Ruby Red Christmas to be something that embodied the holidays, I also wanted to draw from the inspiration of second chance romances- something that I love writing, and the idea that it is never too late to reconnect with the person that you are meant to be with. When I started writing, I wasn't sure where it was going to go, but I quickly found my rhythm and thankfully, this was one of those novels that really had the characters telling me what to write.
This was a huge passion project for me, and I'm so excited to be sharing it with everyone- and I hope you all enjoy it as much as I enjoyed writing it.

About Lilac Arch Press and their Hi-Lo range of titles:
Lilac Arch Press is becoming known for their line of books written for older adults. Though these books are for anyone, their focus is stories specially crafted for adults beginning to have memory issues and cognitive impairment. This line was created when Denise Leduc, founder of Lilac Arch Press, began research after a loved one was diagnosed with dementia in 2021 and found that there were not many books designed for those with cognitive impairment- so she decided to write one herself.
Taking a hi-lo (high interest, low reading level) approach to this line they offer books between 5000 and 20,000 words. Shorter words, sentences, paragraphs and chapters will help ensure that the reading experience is enjoyable. The goal of this line is to keep minds engaged and active in the hopes of slowing the progression of many cognitive disorders that affect older adults. At the end of each chapter, you will find some general discussion. Beautiful coloured artwork is sprinkled throughout each book. Enjoy these books alone, with loved ones, or in a group setting.
Four of Lilac Arch Press's hi-lo books are all based around the holiday time.
