Heating Engineer To Study Possibility Of Conversion
Christmas Vacation Extended From Ten Days To Two Weeks
Major point of discussion at the meeting of the Norwood School Committee last night was the conversion problem, with the members of the board being unanimous in their efforts to operate to the fullest with the county fuel administration. It was thought out that, both the Senior High School and the Junior High School had originally been heated by coal, and then converted to oil and that a conversion back to coal would probably be com-pmtively easy.
However, It was pointed out that additions had been made to both buildings, but that due to the higher efficiency of oil heating, the present boilers were sufficient to compensate for the increased heating space. School committee members last night determined that it was strictly a technical question as to whether the present boilers, reconverted to coal, would be sufficient to heat the entire buildings at the present time, and recommended that a competent heating engineer be consulted on the problem.
At any rate, the Christmas vacation period in the schools has been extended from the usual ten days to a full two weeks, the schools closing on December 18 and reopening January 4. It is expected that the recommendation of the heating expert will be available before that time, and if his report indicates that conversion Is practicable. The job will be performed during the vacation period.
Particularly satisfied with the arrangements are the school children, who are getting an extra four days on their vacation.
