Pvt. Cavanaugh Of Marines Off For Foreign Service
Pvt. Kenneth Cavanaugh, 17, of the U. S. Marine Corps 16ft last Thursday for the West Coast en route to foreign service. He expected to be stationed in China.
Pvt. Cavanaugh, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Martin Cavanaugh of 165 Central Street, entered the service last August and received his boot training at Parris Island, South Carolina. He was recently stationed for about four weeks at Hingham.
He was graduated last June from Norwood High School, where he was a member of the football team.
On the eve of his departure for the coast, Pvt Cavanaugh was tendered farewell party at his home. Fifteen guests were present. Games were played and refreshments were served.
Robert McColgan Back From Pacific
Ship-Fitter First Class Robert McColgan, son of Mr., and Mrs. Michael McColgan of 9 Mylod street, has. recently returned from the South Pacific area and is expecting his discharge from the Navy the first of the year.
McColgan enlisted in the Navy three and a half years ago, receiving his boot training at Newport, R.I. and further training at Quonset. He served 22 months overseas in the Philippines, New Guinea, East Indies, Australia and New Foundland serving 10 months with the P. T. Squadron R, O. N ,
Lt. Robert Holman Is Released From Active Naval Duty
-Lt. Robert Holman of 8 Belmont Street was released from active duty in the Navy at the Boston Separation Center recently, his discharge to be effective after his two months' terminal leave.
Lt. Holman entered the Navy as an Ensign three years and five months ago and was sent to the University of Cornell in New York. He made two trips to the South Pacific, the first with an engineering outfit, the second trip as a material officer attached to an LST. Upon his return from his first trip overseas he received his commission as a full lieutenant.
A graduate of Norwood High and Northeastern, Lt. Holman is the son of Representative and Mrs. Charles Holman of Belmont Street. He is married to the former Rita Hencssey of Walpole.
Lt. Suomi Is Placed On Inactive Duty
After more than two and a half years of military service 2nd Lt. T William Suomi, husband of Mrs. Angelica Suomi and son of Mrs. Amanda Suomi of 28 Melville Avenue, was honorably released from active duty December 18, at the Separation Base of Scott Field Ill. parent radio school of the AAF Training Command. Retaining his rank and commission, he is still subject to recall at any time during the present emergency.
Lt. Suomi entered the Army Air Force in March, 1943, and received his wings and Commission at Big Spring, Texas, in February of this year He has been stationed at Big Spring. Texas. Boca Raton, Fla., Tucson, Ariz., New Mexico and Salina, Kansas.
Previous to entering the service, Lt. Suomi was employed at the Plimpton Press.
Clyde Rafuse Is Discharged
Pfc. Clyde Rafuse, son of Mr. and Mrs. Roland Rafuse of 20 Highview Street, has received his discharge from the Army at Fort Devens.
Overseas for 25 months, Rafuse served in Italy, France, and Germany and holds the Purple Heart, Good Conduct and Victory Medals, the Distinguished Unit Badge, the European Theatre Campaign Ribbon, and four battle stars.
Rafuse was employed at the Plimpton Press prior to his entry.
