CIVIL DEFENSE PROJECT
With the town supplying the material and union apprentices the labor, a model fallout shelter is being built on land adjacent to the Norwood fire station on Central street. Labor, management and government are cooperating in Norwood to provide a completely furnished family fallout shelter exhibit in the heart of the town's business district.
Sponsored by Town Manager Walter A. Blasenak and the Norwood Board of Selectmen, the shelter exhibit Is under construction by union apprentices of Local 42, Bricklayers, Masons and Plasterers International Union; the Norfolk District Council of Carpenters, and Local 747 of the Painters Union.
The apprentices are engaged in work and study programs supervised by the U. S. Labor Department's Bureau of Apprenticeship and Training and approved by the Division of Apprentice Training of the Massachusetts Department of Labor and Industries.
Contracting equipment for the shelter, which is being built at the intersection of Central and Nahatan streets in downtown Norwood, Is being provided by A, Bonfatti and Company of Norwood. The town is providing the building materials.
The exhibit, scheduled for completion on December 1, will be equipped with signs providing dimensions, size of lumber, costs of materials and other information.
Arrangements for apprentices to undertake the public service work were made by Roy W. White, business agent of Local 42, Bricklayers, Masons and Plasters International Union; Thomas Moseley, business agent of the Norfolk District Council of Carpenters, and Frank Rodak, business agent of Local 747, Painters Union.
