Emme Wynn hasn't really belonged anywhere so when her estranged grandmother tracks her down and invites her to come to Sweetgrass, Alabama, she accepts. There, she meets her cousin, Cora Bee Hazelton, who starts off a bit standoffish but needs some help after breaking her ankle. As Emme and Cora Bee become friends they discover they have a lot in common - they both love their grandmother Glory, they both have had their hearts broken, and they both have secrets.
Can I live on Hickory Lane? This small town seems so cute and charming. The neighborhood on Hickory Lane is a place where all the neighbors know each other and have meals together. Emme even guesses correctly when she assumes that Glory doesn't even lock her door. I loved this town and I loved all the characters.
I especially loved reading Emme's and Cora Bee's journies through the book. As Emme starts to embrace Sweetgrass, she lets go of a lot of her fears and discovers strength in herself. Cora Bee learns how to let people in and help when she needs it. The two cousins both find love and I thought the chemistry between the two couples was perfect.
I really liked all the touches of magical realism, especially the garden in the middle of Hickory Lane. I was hoping for a little more magic in the book, especially after reading Midnight at the Blackbird Cafe. I kind of kept waiting for something whimsy or magical to happen, and when it did, it just left me wanting more.
That being said, I can't wait to read another book by this author!
