Micky's 3 star review
I found the first 20% of The Runaway Heiress really engaging but from there on my interest peaked and waned. The heroine, Cassie was interesting in terms of her thinking but also she was a bit too quick to trust her new protectors and love interest. I liked Hal, the MMC, but also he was demonstrating signs of insta-something very quickly. That became the underlying foundation for what they had and I wanted a bit more of a harder-fought feeling in the earlier parts of their time together.
We did get trouble later on but I didn't enjoy the reason for their misunderstanding. The Georgina storyline felt Wickham and Lydia to me. I wanted a bit more of the family so that I could understand Hal and why he was the way he was.
Overall, the characterisation felt a little superficial. Both separate and together, I wanted to dig deeper with these characters but there was limited scope. The dialogue in the intimate scenes felt a little awkward to me but I recognise this might have worked for other readers.
This wasn't as strong as the first book I read from this author, but I will read a future read to see if it works better for me.
Thank you to Allison & Busby for the review copy.
