Hi friends, today I want to take a look at the new 36 set of Sennelier la petite Aquarelle watercolors and compare them to the first iteration of the set I purchased 6 or so years ago. I was initially very impressed by this student-grade line of paint and I thought it compared very favorably to the Sennelier professional line. Here is a swatch I made back then of both lines. I wanted to share this old swatch so you can see the colors are all still lovely. That said, I wouldn't expect them to fade because they were stored away from light.
I wanted to try newer versions of this paint because I had several comments on my old review video stating that they bought the paint and it was not good. I wasn't sure if there was a decline in quality since I bought mine or a bad batch (there were lots of inconsistent art supplies released during the pandemic as manufacturers had to substitute for available ingredients) or if the users had accidentally purchased counterfeit products. When I saw that Sennelier had a 36 set out I decided to buy it to compare and also see what newer colors they added to the line. Watch the video for my in-depth evaluation and scroll to the bottom of the post for the new to old Sennelier la petite Aquarelle swatches.
This new 36 set might be a bit hard to get your hands on, Amazon had one in stock at the time of writing so if it's sold out you can check back later. The price is also about $9 more than what I paid. Blick also carries the paint but only in the 12 and 24 sets. I'm not crazy about the colors in the 12 set though, I think the 24 set is a better bet. A viewer told me that the Sennelier la petite Aquarelle watercolors were the same as Jackson's house brand watercolors. I'm not sure if this is true but I have heard from many trusted sources that Senneler makes Jackson's artist watercolors but the formulation is a bit different and not quite as good so that would track that Sennelier uses the same formulation for Jackson's as well as the La Petite Aquarelle line. Jackson's has more colors in their line including real cadmium and cobalt which are not in the la petite line. Again, this is only speculation. I have not tried the Jackson's line of watercolors myself.
The other odd thing is that I have only been able to find the 36 la petite Aquarelle from California Fine Arts Alliance on Amazon. That's who I bought mine from on Amazon back in July. I received it in great condition and quickly. It looks completely legit and when I compare the new set with my old set they are very similar, most colors are identical. See the swatch above, the old colors are swatched above the new colors so you can compare. The weird thing is that this 36 set is not even up on Sennelier's website yet. What gives? Maybe this is an exclusive product for the California Fine Arts Alliance. I don't know but I am pleased with the quality of the paint and I am glad I bought them, if nothing else to see how the quality of the new vs the old version is holding up. I hope you found this useful. Would you like to see more new vs old product comparisons? I have done a few and organized them in this playlist if you want to see them. That's all for today, happy crafting!
