Two Families in Dramatic Meeting, Join in Meal; Arraignment Today
MOTHERS OF VICTIM, ACCUSED—Two grief-stricken mothers embrace in Norwood, Mass., as they sob out promises to pray for each other's children—one slain, the other charged as the slayer. Mrs. Peter S. Makarewicz Sr., left, mother of a 15-year-old youth accused of the murder, and Mrs. Joseph Annese, mother of slain Geraldine Annese, console each other in their hour of sorrow. Police said that the boy, a former schoolmate of the slain girl, waited for her until she returned from a date, and then lured her into the garage where the body was found next morning.—AP Wirephoto.
The grief-stricken families of murdered Geraldine Annese and her accused slayer, Peter Makarewicz, comforted each other today in a moving scene of mutual compassion.
Mrs. Mary Annese, her tears mixing with those of Mrs. Adrienne Makarewicz, embraced her neighbor from a sick bed and vowed to pray for mercy for the alleged murderer of her youngest child.
"I am sorry for you. May God have mercy on your boy," the bereaved mother cried, as she clung to the weeping Mrs. Makarewicz.
In dramatic succession, she turned to the youth's father and brother, Richard, beseeching them:
"Go and pray for my little girl and maybe then we all will know the answer. Why? Why?"
NORWOOD FAMILIES JOINED—Their faces mirroring the intense emotional scene, parents of accused slayer Peter Makarewicz join with the sister of murdered Geraldine Annese in a moment of grief and compassion. Left to right, Nancy Makarewicz, mother, Adrienne, Mrs. Jennie Gasharelli, and Makarewicz Sr.
One by one, forgetting for a moment their own tragic loss, the other members of the An-nese family stepped forward to speak with the Makarewicz's.
Members of both families then sat down to a light meal together, in the Annese kitchen, but so violent had been the mental impact of the meeting that Mrs. Makarewicz had to be taken home and put to bed.
The meeting followed an equally-moving scene between the parents and their son at Norfolk County Jail, Dedham, this morning.
