Seminole Patchwork with Paper decorated Box
OH! I'm delighted by the turnout of our on-line community in the first of my mini-workshops on Seminole Patchwork with Paper.
Next session is Saturday November 25, zoom doors open at 12:53 pm, and we start promptly at 1:00. The zoom link will be https://us04web.zoom.us/j/73281685909?pwd=SUgwZGc2R096VndpSXpraVRPdURVUT09
Be sure to bring the TOOLS listed in my previous post.
If you want to work along with me you will need to precut the strips according to the system I described in the first session. If you missed the first session, you can catch up by watching a Youtube video everything we covered (23 minutes) or you can just watch the short (<4") video that describes the cutting of strips .
MATERIALS: (all the colored papers I will be using are cover weight paper, all the pdfs are printed on 20lb copy paper):
- 1 Dark orange strip, 6 units wide
- 1 Light orange strip, 6 units wide
- 1 Black strip, 3 units wide
- 1 Yellow strip, 3 units wide
- 1 copy of Second Page Lines PDF
To make the strips, use First Page Lines PDF.
For just one more week, if people want the convenience of my paper pack, you can order it through my etsy shop. These papers will are specific to just the first four sessions.
Is this a simple pattern or one that pushes you to be thoughtful?
A special note to the people who showed up on Saturday: I hope you play around with the one pattern we went over. You might think, "oh, got that..." but let me assure you that the opportunities this one motif offers is limited only by your involvement with it.
The fact that we are working with paper, instead of the traditional fabric, gives us so many opportunities. Personally, I really like adding variations of this checkerboard motif onto 3D objects. If I think what I make needs something more I may overlay one size of tiles over another, or get out my markers and colored pencil and draw on the tiles. You can use patterned origami paper, photographs, and magazines.
Within hours of our first session Gerry McGaunn send me this photo, where he followed up with using his gel printed papers with text, and also with some other graphics. I was just delighted by this, especially since I hadn't used any printed words in any of the designs I've been trying out trying out...
Which leads me to want to mention that this on-line community of creators that has emerged in the virtual world continues to amaze and nourish me. A couple of years ago, when I did the Accordion 101 series, I didn't yet have a sense of the people "out there." Now, instead of feeling like I-am-teaching-you, my attitude is that we-are-all-in-this-together, so let's do this.
My boxes, hanging out together
One final thing to say today: it's November 20, which means that it's been 14 full years since my first post. This first post was simply a paragraph accompanied by a photo of a little girl who reminded me of myself. I don't know if that post has gotten many views, but the very next post has been viewed nearly every day since it was published: my stats show it has attracted 32. 4K views. Who knew!
It's been great to be able to here with you all.
