During my perusals of the online stacks at the library, I've noticed there are a lot of books that have to do with clubs of one sort or another. While book clubs might be the most common, there are other, far deadlier fictive clubs. Here's a highlight of some killer clubs.
In The Dead Girls Club by Damien Angelica Walters, we meet Heather, who was part of the titular club with some other girls in high school. They traded and enjoyed scary stories, real or imagined. But when one of the girls insists that one of the scary stories is real, she isn't believed by most. Then she ends up dead. No matter how much she tries to forget, Heather knows the truth. We see Heather wrestle with her past in a 'now' and 'then' story frame, starting in 1991 and then jumping forward 30 years, in this creepy tale perfect for this dark season.
If you love horror films, you'll love The Mary Shelley Club by Goldy Moldavsky. In this YA novel, you follow Rachel as she tries to find her place in a new school. Still haunted by a home invasion a year before where one of the invaders got away, she pulls pranks and eventually catches the eye of the Mary Shelley club, a secretive club that engages in Fear Tests based around urban legends and horror movies. Rachel gets initiated and the pranks move to a whole new level. As they steadily get more dangerous, Rachel begins to feel like she's being targeted by someone outside the club. This novel is so fast paced, you may have a hard time putting it down.
You may have watched the movie Fight Club, but did you ever read the book by Chuck Palahniuk? If you haven't seen the movie, let me give you a run down on the book. The unnamed narrator and a man named Tyler Durden start a Fight Club with only one rule: no one talks about Fight Club. Their Club soon morphs into an anarchist group bent on destroying society as we know it. Will they succeed? Read this satire on consumerism and masculinity with a noir feel to it to find out, then watch the movie to see which one you like best.
Danger abounds in these three books about people who join clubs and get in over their heads. I'll be back with some more clubs to suggest soon!
