I was at Rhodes University in Grahamstown (now Makhanda) for 23 years. First as a student, then as a teacher. It was a liberal residential English-language university situated in a small town. Despite it's small size and more rural location, it attracted students such as Wilbur Smith and teachers such as André Brink.
One of the more colourful and well-known academics was Obie Oberholzer, who used to work at the Fine Art department. He was very plain-spoken and hugely talented in the sometimes underrated field of photography. He took striking photographs in small towns and the arid desert. I always remember him telling me that a good camera does not make a good photographer. Obie always saw and captured something that was not visible to the naked eye. That takes incredible talent.
