Waist Gunner In Eighth Air Force
A US ARMY EIGHTH AIR FORCE BOMBER STATION, England-Five crewmen on an Eighth Air Force Flying Fortress representing five sections of the United States, including Norwood, ganged up against five pilots from Nazi Germany during the recent shuttle-bombing of Regensburg. The result was five flaming Luftwaffe planes crashing onto the German ground.
The successful American gunners were 2nd Lt. David Leventhal, 1702 S. Knoxville Street, Tulsa, Okla.; 2nd Lt. William P Domey, 509 W. 189th Street, New York City; S Sgt. Donald E. Sanbum, Saginaw, Mich., S/Sgt John C. Leahy, Norwood, Mass., and S/Sgt. Harry C, Rudberg, Mankato, Minn.
The bag included two of the twin-engined Junkers 88s and three of the fast-fighting Messerachnfitt 110s.
Lt Leventhal, the navigator, and Lt Domey, the bombardier, on the fortress, got theirs from the Fortress' nose, S/Sgts. Leahy and Rudberg, waist gunners, shot the fighters down on either side of the Fortress during one of the most violent of many attacks by the Nazis, and S'Sgt. Sanbum, tail-gunner, shot his down as it was attacking from the rear.
The crew, led by 1st Lt. Johi Pettenger, the pilot, bombed occupied France on the return trip from Africa.
