Ciancarelli Is the Honor Man of His Company

Awarded the highest distinction which may be given a seaman during his recruit training, that of being chosen as Honor Man of his recruit company, Maggio Ciancarelli is spending a day leave at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Leonardo Ciancarelli, 11 St George Avenue, Norwood, following his graduation from the Naval Training Station, Newport, Rhode Island, last Saturday morning.

Chosen by his Company Commander as the outstanding all-around member of his company, Apprentice Seaman Ciancarelli was presented with the Honor Man certificate at an impressive ceremony during his final Exhibition Drill late last week.

Ciancarelli was graduated from Norwood High, where he was a member of the varsity track team in 1940. He served on the Yearbook staff and as a member of the Norwood High School Executive Board.

After a year of employment in the leather industry, Ciancarelli became interested in the Navy during rough conversations with friends. Convinced that the Navy, with its present vast expansion program, was the place to learn a useful trade, he joined up in the Regular Navy for the full six-year enlistment, instead of taking advantage of the four-year or emergency duration Reserve enlistment. During his term of service, Ciancarelli hopes to attain the rating of Electrician's Mate.

Following the completion of his leave, he will return to Newport to await assignment either to sea duty or to one of the many Navy trade schools where he may begin study at once toward the attainment of his goal.

John E. Folan
John E. Folan, candidate for the unexpired term of Selectman John M. Mutch in the coming special election, enters the field of candidates not only with previous experience on the selectmen's board but with the added advantage of having gained that experience in the early days of Norwood's present charter. He sat with almost the first board to serve under the town manager form of government. John Gillooly was one of the first five on the board under the new charter set-up, but after serving a year refused to run again, and Mr. Folan was elected to the Board
