Hi friends! Every October for the last few years, I have taken part in the #inktober art challenge. Basically, you create art using ink every day for a month. I love it! Every day, there is a different prompt. You can find them here, and you create art based on that prompt. Even when it's a prompt that isn't that interesting to me, like today's prompt "spiders," it's still enjoyable to try and create something that fits.
I love art challenges because they make you think creatively and create art you otherwise wouldn't. If you want to see my daily art this month as I create it, be sure to follow me on Instagram. I liked yesterday's prompt more: Dream. I immediately knew I wanted to draw a "man in the moon" watching over sweet woodland critters.
It turned out just as I had hoped! This illustration worked so well in markers. I did a "man in the moon" hot air balloon another year for Inktober and then recreated it in watercolors. Perhaps I will redo this in watercolor as well; I think it would be nice! But for now, I have a tutorial for my marker process. When I am creating a composite using my imagination and several reference photos, I find it helpful to sketch it out first so I can determine the scale and how the elements will fit together. Once the sketch is complete, I can freely redraw it using pen and markers. You can see the sketch compared to the final painting below.
And here is a heavily edited video of the process. I cut out a lot as this took at least 2 hours. I urge you to remember that anytime you are looking at an artist's work online. Don't compare your work against anyone else's except for the artist you were yesterday. The person you are seeing online could have 20 years of practice under their belt and might have spent 5 hours on the piece. Enjoy the art, appreciate it, and then do your work. Enjoy the video!
