It's 2198 and Jessica Mathers is traveling by teleportation to join her parents waiting for her on a spaceship almost 14 lightyears from Earth. The plan is to explore a new planet to determine if it can support human life. But something goes wrong with the teleportation and Jessica wakes up inside a crashed lander on the planet. The corridors are dark, there are bloody handprints on the walls, and outside are the graves of people she doesn't know.
In the future, people can be transported to far-off places by simply uploading their conscience and downloading it into a 3D-printed body at their destination. This was super interesting as the book explored ideas of what makes a person and self-determination in a science fiction setting. It was also intriguing the way the book handled this idea of uploading and storing your data. It made me wonder if people in this future could live forever just by printing new bodies.
The book is told in a dual timeline that I really enjoyed. There's a mystery as to what happened to cause the lander to crash as well as the mystery/adventure that happens on the planet.
This is a YA book but it didn't feel like I was reading about annoying teenagers. It was very thought-provoking.
