FLOATING POWER—When over an inch of rain fell during the cloudburst on Monday night, a hapless motorist got caught under the Nahatan Street Bridge. A wrecker was called to pull the car to dry ground. (Eugene McLean Photo)
Up to two inches of rainfall were reported in parts of Norwood Monday evening after the storm from the Great Lakes region had passed over the local area. Norwood, Westwood and Needham were hardest hit with 1.5 inches reported at Needham and nearly two inches here.
The intensity of the rainfall varied In the three towns but all experienced flooding at low spots where storm drainage systems were unable to cope with the spectacular cloudburst.
John Anderson and Fred Chapman of Norwood, amateur meteorologists who recorded the storm for the Air Force Aerophysics Laboratory at Blue Hills, measured nearly an inch and one-half here in less than an hour.
The two reported a difference of .12 inches between points only 1500 feet apart. Rainfall of this intensity is rarely experienced in New England, and on the average, rainfall of over one inch per hour occurs but a single time in ten years, said Anderson and Chapman.
In Norwood, 1.39 inches of rainfall was reported during the 20 minute period between 5:40 and 6:00 p.m Monday at a Neponset River location. The storm brought the local precipitation for July to well over four inches.
