Norwood police plan to display badge at headquarters
NORWOOD, Mass. — A local family is giving a piece of history back to the Norwood Police Department.
Dick Murphy served as a patrolman from about 1929 through 1944, and wore "the triple-one" badge during his service. His son, Paul Murphy, of Walpole, decided to return the badge to the department.
The old-style shield was called the "column" style, because of the design. It was worn with uniforms that also differ from the uniforms worn today.
Murphy could be found in only one photo remaining in the department's archives. It is dated Sept. 30,1928 and shows him standing in the back row on the steps of then-new Norwood Senior High School. "Paul tells us his father loved being a Norwood cop, but resigned in 1944 for financial reasons," the department said. "It seems the Norwood police were not well paid, and Dick had four kids that he wanted to put through college."
All four of Dick Murphy's children did graduate from college, thanks to his sacrifices, the department said. SOURCE: Norwood Police Department
