Dalton High Opponents From West of State
With their vigor renewed after a week's rest after their thrilling 4 to 1 victory over Arlington High last Saturday at Braves Field which gave them the Eastern Mass. schoolboy baseball title, the Norwood high nine will tackle Dalton High from the western part of the State tomorrow afternoon at Fenway Park where they will settle who is to be State champion.
With the Coast Guard team playing a game at 2:30, the Norwood-Dalton game is scheduled to start about 4:30 thus affording the fans a chance to see a doubleheader. By bus and train the faithful fans of Norwood will flock to the home of the Red Sox to cheer the local nine to another State title.
Ray Martin, Norwood's ace pitcher and the leading schoolboy pitcher in the State, will toe the mound for Norwood High, his last appearance in the box for the school on the hill Ray has been the guest of the Braves since last Sunday night when he left on the midnight train for Brooklyn to be with the Braves for a week as their guests and to get acquainted with the players.
The Braves returned to Boston last night and Ray is in fine shape for tomorrow's game. The Braves open in Boston today against the Giants, and Ray will be on the Braves bench to root for the Boston team.
John Quinn, Braves secretary invited Ray to spend the week with the Braves and he had a fine time watching a twilight game in Philadelphia on Monday night. Bump Hadley, radio sports announcer stated over the air on Wednesday night that Ray was the guest of the Braves. Immediately after Saturday's tilt with Dalton, Ray is expected to go to the Braves office where he will sign a contract to join the Braves.
The Dalton team is from the Pittsfield area and is coached by George Curtis of Bates College. Their season record is 11 wins against one loss and they are said to be a team that hasn't realized its strength as yet. They will have to be in top form to beat Martin and the Norwood players have promised Benny Murray that they will bat out a victory for Norwood and bring home the State title on Saturday.
Martin really bore down in last Saturday's game with Arlington and had a small blister on his pitching hand after the game. He added 16 strikeouts to his season's record in setting down the Spy Ponders with four hits. The Norwood batsman found their mark and hit safely 8 times to bring home the bacon to Norwood.
In tomorrow's game, Martin will be up against the Western champs and little is known locally of their batting power. Martin stated last night that he was in tip-top shape and if he is his usual self, the Dalton team will be up against some really big-time pitching.
