Some exhibitions bring together many of my interests in one space. History, artistry, politics creative design, culture and textiles all engage me thoroughly. As a celebration of 75 years from the end of a long period of British control of the sub continent and the formation of the nation state of India the Abheraj Boldota Foundation sponsored the creation of 75 textiles. The glory of this project is the intersection of Indian textile history, British control and India's fight to remove that control. These textiles all speak of a glorious cultural heritage and a diversity of historical sources that speak to the riches of India then, now and next.
I tried hard not to drool walking through this exhibition. If you enjoy textiles this is close to Nirvana. They range through a vast colour spectrum, a huge textural variety and weave elements of India's culture and history into every exhibit. The geography and spiritual diversity of the nation is combined with a huge range of materials and skills to celebrate a great national story. I am thankful to Lavina Baldota (the curator) and all those who collaborated in this project for the glory of this exhibition. It is on until Sunday September 3 2023 and I hope I can get back to spend another few hours in the exhibition before then.
