This photograph is from way back in 2009 when I worked with the Cathedral in Gloucester, they bought print from me, and as a bonus I got to visit not only the Cathedral but the Mason's workshop too. This is Olly, as I remember, who was one of the masons then. I'm not sure if he's still there, but the beautiful sculpture he's working on will be, but you'll have to look up. It's a gargoyle and is one of many on the edge of the roof of the building and is where rainwater drains through. One block of stone carved like this is a wonder to contemplate as is the skill of the mason. In the background is the clay model he would have been working from. The head mason at Gloucester is Pascal Mychalysin, and he has trained over 40 masons since he's been there, Olly being one of them. He's a charming French man who had a particular fondness for the cartoons of the late Billy Tidy, so I think it can be said he is properly anglicised. Pascal would have designed and modelled the clay version here as well as having a hand in what Olly is doing here.
The Mason's workshops are sometimes open for the public on Heritage open days in Gloucester, look out for them and go and take a look at what they are doing now.Well with it.
