It is amazing how so much literature exists for conditions that are said to have no cure. Pain: one of the most inexhaustible subjects; everyone has something to say about it. Sometimes it's possible to think of science as a prod used to round up unruly cattle, to get them into the barn. How do they know, how do they know? In some towns, there are lightning rods on almost every roof. Does the likelihood of being struck by electricity in a thunderstorm increase without them? Give or take a few hundred vertical miles, mountain to shore, humans everywhere are still earth-bound. At dusk, a fragrance spills out of a tree and into the yard, reminiscent of jasmine and camphor made into warm oils rubbed on the soles of the feet and the palms of the hand. Through the rainy night, frogs carol with abandon. As air leaves their lungs, it passes over the vocal cords, puffing up the vocal sac like a balloon.
