Bitty and Beau's was founded in 2016 in Wilmington, NC, by Amy and Ben Wright in honor of their two children, Bitty and Beau, who have Down Syndrome. The Jacksonville location opened last November, and Carolyn and I went to the Grand Opening with lots of music and dancing. When I noticed the B&B journals for sale, I said I'd like to get one and rebind it into a sketchbook. She said "Let's go to all of them and sketch!" We have been to 5, only 18 more to go (until another one opens!). All shops are run by individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, and people love the warm vibes.
Cafe Sketchers met there in March on a cold gray morning for coffee and pastry.
Carolyn and I took a trip up through the Carolinas and were able to visit Bitty and Beaus in Charleston, Charlotte, Winston-Salem and Savannah. Wilmington will be next.
I hope you can go to one of these coffee shops across the country, put your pin on the board for your home town, discover their unique use of playing cards and experience the warmth and beauty of these very special places. (Hoping for one to open in Tallahassee soon...)
