Part 1: Roughing It

I've never made a logo before...at least...not for other people. Recently though, I had a fun opportunity to do just that. My coworker is dipping his foot into the world of podcasting, and asked if I could create one with my unique art style. He needed a logo to brand his podcast, hoping to use it to:

  • Identify the podcast on websites like Spotify
  • Promote the show on social media
  • Create merchandise

I started by asking for a write up of the logo that explained the look and feel he wanted: Title, description, colors, fonts, style, mood, etc. The more the better. Images and mood boards were definitely welcome.

After that, I explained my process:

  • STEP 1: Two rounds of sketches & reviews
  • STEP 2: Choose and draw a final sketch of the logo and approve
  • STEP 3: Digitally draw logo in Procreate and Illustrator
  • STEP 4: Decide on a color scheme.
  • STEP 5: Deliver final logo

Soon after our discussion, I received his initial idea:

French onion soup is a reference to a favorite random topic in the show, but the show is not about soup. It's a comedy discussion bit thing. Don't want a literal visual translation of french onion soup. Take this idea and make it as creative and colorful as you want. Have the title, A Crock of Effort!, bubbling out of the cheese, the letters JB overhanging. Use funky font with bold, bright, neon like colors.

I'll admit, I was perplexed. It seemed strange to pair a "comedy discussion bit." with an image of soup. I could see it fitting in more with a cooking podcast.

I rough sketched ideas for logos, stepping outside of the soup motif, pushing it as much as I could.

Below are my round 1 rough sketches:

Chosen design: Row 1, Image 2

My coworker liked the melting bubble design the best, and had some changes to the design.

Shorten A Crock of Effort! to just Effort! Make the bubble bursting or change it to a balloon popping. Going the balloon route, J&B would appear at the end of a string.

Mood Board for Round 2 sketches

While a departure, the changes were still in the realm of the original pitch. I kept to the bursting bubble as I preferred it and it played well with the funky font. I used the mood board above for the second round of sketches.

Everything was moving along smoothly. I never would of guessed how much things were about to change.
