In the charming setting of historic Day House amidst a profusion of floral decorations, friends of Miss Jane Hewett in the Norwood Historical Society and the Norwood Literary Club tendered the retiring librarian a reception Wednesday evening. One hundred and fifty guests, among whom were seventeen relatives of Miss Hewett, were received by those in the receiving line. Besides Miss Jane Hewctt, the guest of honor, and her brother, Mr. Liscom Hewett of Canton, were Mr. Harold Gay, President of the Norwood Historical Society, and Mrs. Gay; Mr. William T. Whedon, President of the Norwood Literary Club and President Emeritus of the Society, and Mrs. Whedon; Mr. W. Winthrop Everett, chairman of the Trustees of Morrill Memorial Library, and Mrs. Everett; and Rev. Charles Hastings Brown, who was general chairman of the reception committee.
Mrs. J. Gordon Mitchell of Westwood and her nephew, Mr. Richard Carleton, sang several selections, accompanied by Mrs. R. T. Lapham at the piano. Through the evening a local boys' orchestra, "The Hot In Spots," under the direction of Robert Very, played incidental music. The boys in the orchestra are Robert Verv, Richard Ncad, Arthur Schramm, Tyler Roundy, and George Brock.
Presented Ring
Mr. William T. Whedon, on behalf of the two societies, presented Miss Hewett with an antique ring which has a diamond center, her birthstone, and a lovely bouquet of flowers.
Refreshments were served by Mrs. H. Ernest Davenport and Mrs. Rupert Chute. Others on the committee were Mrs. Emily Skolfield, Mrs. Alfred Atwood, Mrs. John Gillooly and Mrs. William G. Up- ham. The ushers were the Misses Ruth Upham, Ruth Davenport, Alice Bentley, Jean Bacon, Eleanor Probert, Claire Heatlie, and Marion Fisher.
Those on the general committee were Rev. Charles Hustings Brown, chairman, and Mr. and Sirs. William G. Upham, Mrs. W. Emery Horton, and Miss Abby Spear.
The reception was to honor Miss Hewett on her retirement after forty-one years of service as head librarian of the Morrill Memorial Library. Miss Hewett has been a member of the Norwood Historical Society, serving on the Board of Governors, and the Norwood Literary Society for many years. Upon her retirement, she will live with her sister in Brookline and will spend the summer with her family at Scituate.
