When it comes to birds, I know next to nothing but what I do know is Scott Weidensaul's "Living on the Wind: Across the Hemisphere with Migratory Birds," is a must own, must read and must reference. I loved this book, so much so that I took my time reading it and made copious amounts of notes. As many of you know by having to endure so many bird related posts of late, I'm attempting to educate myself on the wider world of flying things. What I know already is that this will take the rest of my life. There is so much to learn it passes daunting on the way to total surrender.
This book is a goldmine for things like terminology, geography, migration data and more.
Weidensaul is a solid writer who effortlessly bounces from the tactical to the terrain of story as he bounces from location to location. Solid is an understatement by the way. What I also love about this book is that I never got one second of ego or competition which seems to be pervasive in many of the bird books I find. You can tell that Weidensaul is all in without ever having to say it. You can feel the joy he feels in being in the field and in experiencing global migration, which as it turns out, is a unique event for planet Earth. And, any book with a map on the cover is always going to end up on my shelf. Get it, read it, keep it, reference it.
