Ten years ago, Chani Horowitz landed the interview of a lifetime - an interview with movie star Gabe Parker who had just been cast as the next James Bond. Their interview turns into a whirlwind weekend spent together and her resulting article goes viral. Everyone wants to know what happened between her and Gabe. Now, ten years later, Chani is asked to reunite with Gabe for a second interview. What happens when Chani and Gabe meet again and we will ever find out what actually happened that weekend?
I really liked this book and I read it in two days. The only reason I didn't read it all in one sitting is that I had to go to sleep. I was sad when I had to put the book down for the night because I wanted to keep reading to find out what happened.
This book is a mix of events happening in the current time, flashbacks to when Chani first met Gabe and their weekend, and excerpts from Chani's blog and different internet and magazine articles. It's a bit different but I thought it was an interesting format and it worked for me.
The book tackles a lot of things - addiction, insecurity, knowing your worth, success and fame, and romance. Both Chani and Gabe have a lot of insecurities and I thought the way they were written was insightful. Chani's insecurities throughout the book - is she famous because she's a really good writer, or do people just really want to know what happened that weekend with Gabe - were really genuine and I felt for her.
This might be a bit of a spoiler, but I've been told this book is based on a true story about a journalist who spent the weekend with Chris Evans and wrote about it. I did not know this aspect going into reading the book. Honestly, if I had known that, it might have changed the way I thought about the book possibly because I'm not a huge fan of Chris Evans (don't hate me!). Now that I know it, I just keep picturing him as Gabe and I don't love it.
Also, the reviews for this book are all over the place. Some people hate the blog entries and some people love the blog entries. Some people love that the book is based on the GQ article and some people hated it. I had a lot of fun reading everything on the Goodreads page for this book.
