On the 17th day of blogmas...
I can't believe we've made it this far. Just a few more days to go in this December writing sprint.
I was a bit stumped for an idea to write about for today and then I stumbled across some unpopular holiday unpopular opinions and I thought I would add mine to the mix. People have some very strong opinions about the holidays and it seems like you either love them or hate them.
Here are my unpopular holiday opinions about Christmas:
Eggnog is not good. Look, I don't know if it's because you are drinking eggs or what, but eggnog is not great. I love a milkshake as well as something sweet to drink but eggnog is neither of those. I am not a fan.
Christmas should start earlier. We really need more time for the Christmas season. It's kind of a bummer that, in the U.S., Christmas is so soon after Thanksgiving and that we have to wait for one holiday to end before the other begins. It seems like each year, Christmas sneaks up on us and I really think if we had more time it could be more merry.
Ugly Christmas sweaters are not ugly. I think all the "ugly" Christmas sweaters out there are actually really cute. They have adorable pictures of reindeer or snowmen and usually, something lights up or there is something 3D. They are super festive and wholesome and I think they should be embraced.
Elf on the Shelf is creepy. Luckily for me, Elf of the Shelf was created when I was an adult so I never had to suffer through this creepy ritual during Christmastime. The idea that there is an elf, sitting on a shelf, watching you and reporting back to Santa? Doesn't Santa already know what you are doing since he knows when you are sleeping and knows when you are awake? I think the elf creates so much unnecessary work for parents and guardians when they are probably already swamped during December anyway.
"My Favorite Things" is not a Christmas song. The song is from The Sound of Music, a musical/movie that does not take place at Christmas, nor is there any mention of Christmas in this song. I do not understand how this song has come to be played at Christmastime. It's a great song, it's just not a Christmas song.
I like the lead up to Christmas better than the actual day. I love everything leading up to Christmas - the decorations, looking for that perfect gift, the songs, the anticipation leading up to the day, are all much more exciting than the actual day. I love seeing all the presents under the tree before they've been opened and meeting up with family and friends in the days before the holiday. Plus, everyone knows that once Christmas is over, you have to go back to work.
Hot chocolate made with water is trash. Not necessarily a Christmas holiday opinion because you can drink hot chocolate any time of the year but I was reminded of hot chocolate because it seems like everyone in every Hallmark movie is drinking hot cocoa. I love hot chocolate but I only make it with milk. Hot chocolate made with water always seems so diluted and weak. I prefer a rich hot chocolate flavor that usually comes with milk.
Hallmark holiday movies are the best. Speaking of Hallmark movies, these are my favorite movies to watch during the holidays. Yes, they are formulaic and you know how they end but they are the perfect movies to get you in the holiday mood.
