We ended up having a slightly extended break for half term as we were holding a holiday Bible Club at our church which involved quite a lot of preparation. We had a mini review week to round things off. Here are a few of the questions I asked along with pictures of Herby's finished lap book for The Fantastic Flying Journey and some magnificent magpie inkcaps.
Tell me what you know about King Josiah. I don't know... I can't remember... He died in a war and after him there were four kings which were all very very bad and he shouldn't have gone in a war. What was he like? He loved God but he didn't ask God if the letter was true, he just went into battle because he thought it wasn't true.
Tell me what you remember about one of the pretenders who tried to take the throne from Henry VII or tell me what you know about Henry VIII and his wives. Henry VIII was very bad and he took not a wife that he really loved and then the Catholic church decided that he wasn't allowed to have another wife but then he thought, well, this is taking a very long time to decide, I'll go and make my own church. I won't really think about the Roman Catholic church. I'll rule my own church because then I can say that I'm allowed to marry a different wife. Anything else? He married a lot of wives.
Tell me about the frozen zone, including anything you know about the northern lights, igloos, seals, dog sleds or polar bears. Igloos are made out of snow. In the frozen zone they sometimes still have igloos. Igloos have fires in the middle of them. So they can't put fires at the edge of them because the seats are covered in seals' fur. You can't put fire at the edge of them because it might melt the snow. If some of the snow melts and there's a hole in the igloo, all they do is put more snow in the hole.
Tell me about an animal that Emma, Conrad and Ivan meet on their journey and show on a map where they met it. Ivan stepped on it and it looked really like a rock when it's curled up. It was an elephant seal, huge. (She then pointed out their journey on the globe but didn't locate the right spot for elephant seals.)
Describe a landform that you've made out of sand or play dough. I've made a very big part of land and then it goes down to a small bit and then a very big part of land... I made an island called Ireland... And I made lots of little islands.
Tell me all you know about house chestnut trees. Horse chestnut trees are very very horseybecause they have horse hooves on them when you take the leaves off. They have conkers on them, horse chestnuts on them. They're very round and you can use them to fight in battles with string on them... The leaves have pointy bits.
Describe a science experiment that we have done and the results. We did one with raisins and the raisins turned into grapes. We put them in water and they turned into grapes. If we put them in juice they would turn into real grapes, not just have water in them, they would have grape juice in them.
