Logan Ramsay works for the Gene Protection Agency. After he is ambushed while trying to arrest a rogue scientist, he starts to feel a little off. He's remembering things more clearly and can read faster. He doesn't need as much sleep. Logan realizes that the ambush was just a ploy to infect and modify his DNA and that he has become one of the people he used to hunt down. Now he's on the run, knowing that he is the only person that can stop the rest of the world from becoming infected as well.
As soon as I heard that Blake Crouch had published another novel, I put it on hold at the library. I was waiting on hold and then I saw it was one of the library's Peak Picks so I snatched it up! I've read three of his books now and have loved every one. I'm not sure I liked this book as much as Recursion, but it was still a great read.
The book is set in the near future. I don't think we are told exactly what year it is but I loved reading what Crouch envisioned the future to be - there are hyper loops that travel hundreds of miles an hour that can send you all around the country. Driverless cars will take you where you want to go. Climate change is evident, whether it's reading about a flooded Lower Manhattan or how it doesn't snow anymore in the Colorado Rockies.
One of the things I like about Crouch's books is that they draw you in instantly. I was immediately invested in the characters and the world they live in. There is a great mix of science fiction and thriller that kept me turning the pages, wanting to find out what happens next.
The book is a bit heavy on the science side. As the main plot involves Logan's upgraded DNA, there is plenty of discussion about genes and genetic traits that honestly, I didn't really understand. As with other books that discuss science, I tended to read over those parts without really comprehending what was happening. I definitely skimmed some paragraphs more than once.
I think the thing that made me not like this book as much as Crouch's other books is that there is a lot of action in this book. Not only does Logan Ramsay become super smart (or smarter than he already was) but he also becomes a super soldier who can climb the outside of a building which I didn't love. Not that I don't love action. I just felt that it didn't really go with the character.
Still, I liked this book a lot and it is one that I will be thinking about for a while.
