No Parm No Foul is the second book in the Grilled Cheese Mysteries series. We return to Balsam Dell where Carly Hale is running her grilled cheese eatery and entering her cuisine into the annual Halloween food competition. But when her primary opponent Ferris Menard is found dead the morning after the competition, Carly must figure out which one of his enemies killed him before someone close to her is arrested for the crime.
I am adoring these cozy mystery books. I loved being with the characters again and seeing Carly's grilled cheese restaurant and reading about all of her grilled cheese creations. This book has a bit more characters in it than the first one; we meet more of the townspeople who live in Balsam Dell as well as check in with characters from the first book. I did get a couple of individuals mixed up at times - for some reason, all of the male characters seem to blend together and I kept forgetting who was who when they would come into the restaurant.
I liked that we learned more about Grant, Carly's co-worker at the restaurant. I also enjoyed getting to know Evelyn Fitch, a regular who comes into the restaurant almost every day. I hope that we see more of these characters in the upcoming novels.
I thought the mystery as to who killed Ferris Menard was well done. I certainly did not guess who the killer was although, thinking back, the signs were definitely there. I did find Carly to be a bit more annoying in this book. She was told multiple times by the police to stop investigating and then she would just turn around and ask more questions to other people. I was a little frustrated with the way she acted - she was not subtle at all. But it's clear that her heart is in the right place as she has come to care for the people of Balsam Dell. Maybe by the next book, she will have picked up some investigative techniques?
I can't wait for the next book in the series.
