Florence Day is the ghostwriter for a popular romance series. However, ever since she broke up with her boyfriend a year ago, Florence hasn't been able to write any romance and now has to ask her new book editor for an extension on her deadline. Florence is not sure what to do when her extension request is refused since she knows she will be unable to finish the book. When she gets a call that her father has died, Florence returns home to the town she ran away from, her quirky family, and their funeral parlor. What she's not expecting is to find the ghost of her new editor standing outside the funeral parlor front's door.
I liked this book a lot. I know that it's currently getting a lot of buzz and, because of that, people are not going to like it but I thought it was really a lovely story. I adored the interactions that Florence has with her family and the townspeople. I felt her anguish about her breakup with her boyfriend. I loved the growing romance with Ben.
The writing is a bit verbose but I felt it fit the story. It is lyrical and flowery at times but the writing complimented the story so well. I thought that the story was very fanciful and romantic and the writing and the language just helped bring that out.
The slight hint of the paranormal was a surprise and I enjoyed reading Florence's interactions with Ben while trying to make it appear like she was not talking to herself. That being said, I don't think this book is for everyone. It was funny at times, sad at times, poetic at times, and there are ghosts (or mainly one ghost). If I could change anything about this book, it would be to add more ghosts!
I've read the reviews for this book and it seems like people either love it or hate it. A common complaint was that the book was too millennial or twee. Which I did not see at all but then again, I'm not sure what makes a book "millennial". Perhaps because Florence is in her late 20s? Is it because she's a bit unusual with a quirky family? (Can only millennials be quirky?) Additionally, a lot of people had strong feelings about the fact that Florence calls her coffee "zoom zoom juice" so if that would annoy you, be warned. There are a lot of pop culture references and name-dropping, specifically of current popular romance authors, which I found to be a bit annoying.
This book isn't so much a romance as it is about a family grieving and Florence finding her way. It was a bit unusual but I liked it a lot.
