Secret agent Emma Makespeace is charged with bringing Michael Primalov, the son of Russian spies, to safety. When her agency is compromised, Emma realizes the list of people she can trust is slim. Not only that, but Russian agents have hacked the CCTV cameras and are watching every move Emma and Michael make. With no one coming to help, Emma realizes that she and Michael are on their own to make their way to MI6 headquarters. But can they get there without being found by the Russian agents?

I am a fan of spy and espionage novels and the fact that this one had a female spy made it all the better. I feel like we read a lot about spies who are men, but not a lot about women spies.

The book takes place over the course of one night but it was filled with a lot of action and suspense. Emma and Michael only have to go a few miles to get to MI6 headquarters but with the Russians watching and hiding around every corner, you'd think they had to go 100 miles. Emma and Michael are trying to stay in the shadows and sneaking down sidestreets to avoid the cameras. There is even a short stretch where they wade through an underground river (I didn't know there are rivers that run under London!). I'm not sure why it didn't occur to me, because it is right in the book synopsis, but it did take me by surprise that this book occurs over the stretch of one night. I guess I need to read more closely!

As we read about Emma and Michael making their way across the city, the chapters are interspersed with flashbacks to how Emma was recruited and became a secret agent. I thought those chapters were super interesting, especially the ones about Emma's past and training, and I almost liked those chapters better than the ones set in the present.

Emma is not exactly James Bond or Ethan Hunt but she is resourceful and smart. However, there is one scene near the beginning of the book that annoyed me a bit. The Russian agents had caught up to Emma and Michael and one of the agents starts to strangle Emma. Michael ends up saving her by hitting the agent in the head with his computer and knocking him out. While I can appreciate the fact that Emma is human, and it was 2 against 1, the fact that Emma had to be saved by Michael bugged me a little. Maybe the author meant nothing about this and maybe I am blowing it out of proportion, but I was irritated that the guy had to save the girl.

I hear there this book is the start of a series and I will be looking for the next book to see what happens to Emma next.
