The school term starts on Monday but we've been gradually getting back into lessons at home for a couple of weeks now. We enjoyed four weeks off, including two weeks away, and it felt like time to get back to our normal routine. We've still got another week until all the home ed groups start up again.
I've been doing a bit of planning over the summer and the thing I've struggled with most is working out some sort of timetable. I want to know what's going on when but I don't want to feel guilty of we don't do quite as much as I set out. I think I've worked out a system now whereby essentially I have a list of things that happen daily and then a second list of things that happen roughly once a week. This second list acts as a loop schedule. At the moment I aim for two or possibly three things from the loop schedule once the daily activities are done. When I get to the end of the list I just start again at the top.
I've also got a term timetable with chapters of books planned. I used the schedule from Ambleside Online as a template for this and just changed it to suit us.
There's a few books that I'm excited to be starting this term but the one that we're all enjoying the most so far is Gerald Durrell's Fantastic Flying Journey. It's a wonderful story of a family that fly round the world in a hot air balloon in search of their great uncle. They meet lots of animals along the way. Herby has started a lap book to keep some pictures and notes about the animals they've seen. We've been following their journey on the globe and there's a handy map with the route plotted in the book.
