This Michaelmas Term the Middle Temple Library will be running a number of events and training sessions. To start off the new term we will be hosting an open evening for new students and members of the Inn. This will take place on Wednesday 28th September from 17:30-19:30. During the event you will be introduced to the Library and the services we have to offer. You will also have the opportunity to meet up and chat with established members. Refreshments and special freebies will also be available so do come and join us. Book your place here.
This autumn also sees the return of our popular library tours. These tours are available to book for members and students of all Inns of Court and will take place October 3rd-12th. Tours last approximately 30 minutes and are limited to five people. Please contact the library to book: library@middletemple.org.uk. All attendees will be entered into a prize draw for a gift card.
We will also be running a variety of introductory qualifying sessions. These include sessions on Effective legal Research, Parliamentary Materials, Human Rights, EU Legal Research, "You v Google" and US Legal Research. See our Events page for further information and to book. We are also happy to accommodate one-to-one training sessions for Inns of Court members. Please contact us for further information.
This month saw the opening of a new library exhibition, Botany at Middle Temple. Featuring items from the Inn's collection of Rare Books, Manuscripts, Archives, and Garden, the exhibition explores the fascinating topic of botany and plants at the Middle Temple: from sixteenth-century woodcuts illustrating medical botany, seventeenth-century tracts promoting food security, to murder trials.
The exhibition also features documents that tell the story of botany at the Inn, such as gardener's bills and photographs. Selected plants have been taken from the Garden and pressed to accompany the artefacts on display.
To accompany the exhibition we will be hosting two special events on Tuesday 25th October. First up will be two flower arranging workshops which will take place from 11:00-13:00 and 14:00-16:00. During these sessions we will be using flowers picked from the gardens at Middle Temple to craft a floral display. The workshops are free to attend and refreshments will be served. Places are limited so be sure to book by contacting the library.
At 6pm Middle Temple members will be able to join us in the library for a talk by Dr. Mark Spencer, Botany Curator at the Linnean Society and author of Murder Most Florid: The Work of a Forensic Botanist. Since 2008 Dr. Spencer has worked on many serious crime cases including domestic terrorism, wildlife crime and murder. Find out more about his work here. This event is free for members. Please RSVP by Thursday 20th October by emailing library@middletemple.org.uk.
The exhibition runs until December 2022 and can be viewed during the Library's opening hours. For further information on this and previous exhibitions, please see our Exhibitions page.
