In the little town of Dove Pond, Sarah Dove works as the town's librarian. There, in the library, she is surrounded by books - books that speak to her and tell her of things that are to come. Like the fact that Grace Wheeler will soon be moving to town with her ailing foster mother and young niece. Sarah is convinced that Grace is the person the books have been telling her has the ability to save their town, which is almost in financial ruin. However, Grace has only vowed to stay in the town for one year. Can the residents of Dove Pond convince her to stay?
This book was super cute. It definitely reminded me of Practical Magic or Garden Spells with its small-town feel with doses of magical realism. I loved all the characters, although sometimes it was a little difficult to keep all the townspeople straight in my head. Each townsperson has a distinct personality that just adds to the charm of the town.
This book is light-hearted and fun, but it does touch on some serious subjects, including dementia and PTSD. But it's also about finding a place to belong, something I think Grace has been looking for for a long time. She has a lot on her plate and starts off a bit prickly. Her life has been upturned and I loved watching her slowly integrate with Dove Pond and finding a home with the town and people.
When I read the synopsis for this book, I thought that Sarah would be the main character. But it's actually Grace that we seem to follow more. I was a little bummed because I definitely wanted to read more about the talking books and how they tell Sarah things. The book is told from Sarah, Grace, and Travis's (Grace's neighbor) points of view which I thought was interesting seeing as how I viewed Grace as the main character.
I do wish there was a little more romance in the story. There are hints of romance between Grace and Travis and I think we are supposed to believe that they end up together. There are also hints of romance between Sarah and Blake, the town's sheriff, but their story is left open-ended. I can only hope that their romance will be portrayed in a subsequent book because there is a lot of backstory that is hinted at that I wanted to learn more about.
The book has an abrupt ending, and I was caught a bit off guard when it ended. It's the first book in the Dove Pond series so hopefully, the next book will pick up where this one left off.
