I find this so true. At school I was in the academic stream so I had to learn Latin and higher level Mathematics for 5 years. I would have much preferred the practical stream where, in place of Latin and Mathematics you did domestic science
- cooking
- sewing
- typing
- shorthand
- bookkeeping.
I always thought that those skills would serve me better in life but my parents did not agree. I have some use of Latin in my job, but I have never used maths to any great degree, particularly now that you have calculators and Google to help you with things.
Basically the practical stream in our education system prepared women to be secretaries and housewives, and the academic stream prepared you for university studies.
I get that school cannot teach you everything, and that parents do play a role. My dad taught me how to change a tyre, a plug, a washer on a tap. But I would have loved learning more practical things about adult life at school.
