it has been five years since the Victoria Handweaver's and Spinner's Guild hosted the ANWG conference "Treadle Lightly"
and celebrated Canada Day and U.S. Independence Day together
it seems like a lifetime ago
this weekend I celebrated with a trip to the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria
to see their exhibit featuring the work of Maude Lewis
June 18, 2022 - October 16, 2022 Organized by McMichael Canadian Art Collection
One of Canada's most beloved folk artists, Maud Lewis (1903—1970) was famous in her lifetime for her brightly coloured and endearing paintings of rural Nova Scotia. This show highlights Maud Lewis's achievement, looking carefully at her serial repetition of images and motifs across her career. From her black cats and kittens, to her cart horses and oxen hauling logs, to her quayside scenes of ships in port and the Maritime landscape in all seasons, Maud Lewis made paintings that delight in their optimism and buoyant vitality.
beautifully organized and extensive, it covers the entire range of her work over a lifetime - and it was a very difficult life
she painted cards and sold them for 25 cents - exquisite minatures
the movie "Maudie" with British actress Sally Hawkins playing the part of Maude is worth watching
in another gallery there was this modern replica of a tradition potlatch apron
it is very finely woven by Meghann O'Brien
I could have studied it for hours
and this incredible piece - I truly regret not making a note of the weaver
it appears to be a bracelet woven on handspun mountain goat hair
the pattern is either woven or stitched with very fine thread
the following day we went to the opening of " Supply Victoria - Creative Reuse Center"
for locals it is at the corner of 750 Fairfield - an old government building
it has 3 floors of small artist's studios featuring a wide variety of work - (the studios will only be open occasionally)
needle felted portraits by Dale Roberts -they are so realistic and absolutely incredible
"mail art" I didn't realize it has a world wide following - you can google it!
Supply Victoria will be open Thursday - Saturday -- 11am - 6pm
for locals, they have a 5 page list of craft/artist materials they will take for recycling
it will get me started cleaning out the studio - look out stash, here I come!
and finally - if you have stuck it out this far
I came home to stitch on a very cool, rainy Sunday
more needle and thread doodling - the quote is from Amanda Gorman's inaugural poem
https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-d&q=amanda+gorman+inaugural+poem
it is a "must read" and applies to all of humankind not just America
