We went to see Downton Abbey: A New Era yesterday. Interestingly, the last movie we went to see was the previous Downton Abbey movie, in 2019.
If you have enjoyed the Downton Abbey series and previous film, then this one is a must for you. Like the previous movie, some loose ends are prettily tied up and this is great if you have followed the characters through the six television seasons and the movies. I won't be giving any spoilers by saying both my husband and I shed some tears of happiness and sadness during the movie (we are both very pragmatic and non-romantic but we are big movie criers...)
The Downton Abbey television series starts in 2012 with the sinking of the Titanic, and you can see the evolution of politics, society, fashion, and working life over several decades during the series and movies - particularly for women. The fashions are completely different from start to finish, showing more independence and freedom for women - you can see ankles appearing and corsets disappearing. Yet nowadays, grandparents and grandchildren wear more or less the same clothes. I wonder if we will ever move away from jeans and t-shirts, or are great fashion revolutions over?
