Yesterday I got the notification that my proposal was accepted for participation in the Second National Conference for Justice in Geosciences. I am ecstatic. The mission of this gathering is so close to my heart as an incoming faculty member at Mississippi State University. As a human geographer who uses GIS, but also as a humanist, going into a department that is recognized as the premier brain trust of meteorology, I see the opportunity at SNC as a way to bridge conversations between social scientists, humanists, and geoscientists. I am the quintessential "hybrid" academic.
What do I mean by this?
Hybrid: workers who blend and combine their different professional identities together, working from the intersections of those identities
Sarabeth Berk
And I plan to take the knowledge gained at this gathering back to home department to share with colleagues as we think about ways to collaborate to recruit students and continue doing excellent work!
I want to thank the organizers of SNC, Dr. Raquel Bryant and Dr. Benjamin Keisling, for their support and encouragement throughout this process. We are all working together to make sure anyone who wants to study the geosciences CAN and WILL.
