The huge Cyprus in front of Villa Campestri is an amazing tree. You can fully understand its size only by seeing a photo of a person in front of it.
There is no such thing as a male or female Cyprus tree, but to me this is definitely a male.
It has become a symbol. The archetype of this amazing tree, so typically Tuscan.
In old times, every time a child was born, the contadini would plant a Cyprus Tree.
Etching A metal plate is covered by wax. With a metal point the artist draws on the plate, removing the wax. Once finished, the plate is set into diluted nitric acid, that corrodes the naked surface. The longer the drawing is kept in the acid, the darker and broader the lines become. Corroding can be stopped by putting wax where desided, and letting the rest to continue corroding.
Aquatint The plate is sprinkled with adhesive dust, that produce tiny dots when laid in a bath of nitric acid.
Saltgrain Wax is laid on the surface of the metal plate. Before it dries, standard seasalt is added, and it adheres to the surface. Once in the nitric acid bath, the acid bites and dissolves the salt, slowly, so that tiny gradients are produced. Fairly random as a technique, it provides interesting background patterns.
Spitbite Originally obtained by directly spitting on the plate while the acid bath (so as to slowdown the effect of the acid), it is now also obtained by brushing some acid on the plate. The longer it stays on the surface, the darker the pattern will result.
