Title: A Defiant Maiden's Knight (Protectors of the crown 1) by Melissa Oliver
Date Published: 23rd June 2022
Publisher: Mills & Boon Historical
Genre: Historical Romance
Description:
A knight's protection…That she doesn't want…or need?
Joan Lovent may be losing her sight but she refuses to lose her independence too. So when Sir Warin de Talmont tells her it's too perilous to be out alone in the city, she doesn't pay him any heed. But with threats surrounding them, she begins to value his protection and helps with his dangerous work in return. If only the powerful connection between them wasn't so impossible to ignore!
I want to thank Rachel at Rachel's Random Resources for inviting me on this tour and the author for providing me with a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
I've seen some of these Mills & Boon historical novels around, but I've never read one, so when I read the synopsis for A Defiant Maiden's Knight, I thought I needed to give it a go.
I have found out that this is a spin-off from Melissa Oliver's previous series of novels, but you don't need to have read them to enjoy this one, which is something I can confirm having not read them myself.
What a fun mediaeval romp this was! I devoured this in two sittings, I just didn't want to put it down.
Both Warin and Joan were fantastic characters. Joan is smart and independent but is slowly losing her sight, but that doesn't stop her from her daily pilgrimage to volunteer, helping orphaned/homeless children. Warin has dedicated his life to protect the crown but is still carrying around the grief of losing his family. Their chemistry really sizzled off the page and their back and forth was a joy to read.
Melissa Oliver created a wonderful atmosphere in the story, with vivid imagery and description that almost made me feel like I'd gone back in time to the mediaeval times. It also didn't bog the story down too much, and the story moved at a nice, snappy pace.
The main aspect of the story was, of course, the romance, but I absolutely loved the side plot of trying to foil a dastardly plot against the crown. And that Joan was not only included in finding the culprits, but she was integral was great to read.
It was a slow burn romance for most of the book, but as we neared the end, it felt like some events were a little rushed.
A Defiant Maiden's Knight is a captivating romance with plenty of danger and intrigue along the way to keep you glued to those pages.
