If you are looking for a novel based on real-world potential scenarios about the next great war then look no further than Ghost Fleet. This book is a work of collaboration between P.W. Singer and August Cole, both of whom know their way around the neighborhood. Singer is a strategist at New America and consults for the U.S. military. Cole is a futurist and an Atlantic Council senior fellow and focuses on using fiction to explore the future of war. (These are the kind of people I would like to know.)
On a side note before we begin. I like both the cover art and the end sheet design. I don't often make comments in regard to the design of most novels but this one caught my attention. Design, even for novels, is an integral part of the experience of a good book and gets entirely left behind in most of the e-reader options. Nothing quite like holding the real deal. (The futurist might beg to differ, but what the Hell is a futurist anyway?)
There are literally thousands of people being employed in this country, and yours too, thinking about the "What if?" of WWIII. What if China, Russia, and the United States decide to throw some leather? What if China takes down the satellite coms and the U.S. military loses the ability to communicate? What if Hawaii is overrun? And what if outer space and cyberspace land on equal footing to war on land, sea, and air?
The book is filled with tech we will actually see in the coming years, and this brings me to another point. The endnotes. Oh boy. Much of what you read in this novel details ACTUAL tech, ACTUAL findings, and ACTUAL events covering cyber espionage, cyber sabotage, the friction over rare Earth metals, undersea gas exploration, and much, much more. This s^%$ is actually going down and HAS gone down already while most of us were eating takeout and watching Netflix. (The modern opioids of the masses.)
How will Americans fare as the insurgency? How does the inclusion of Chinese-made impact our machinery of war, and what happens when three superpowers decided to unleash their dogs of war on all five domains? With the looks of what is going down in Ukraine, we know with certainly at least one despot is willing to see "What if?" You may want to buy some water, friend.
