Children's Day/Book Day, commonly known as Día, is a celebration of children, families and reading that culminates yearly on April 30. It emphasizes the importance of literacy for children of all linguistic and cultural backgrounds. This nationally recognized initiative was founded in 1997 by author and children's author and poet Pat Mora.
You can celebrate Día this week with activities from The Seattle Public Library in English and Spanish. Find bilingual descriptions of the events and how to register at www.spl.org/DiaDeLosNinos. Here is the lineup.
A visit with illustrator Rafael López: From 10 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. on Friday, April 29, join a livestream event featuring Rafael López. López is the award-winning artist and illustrator of numerous books for young people, including "Just Ask!" by Sonia Sotomayor, "Dancing Hands" by Margarita Engle, and "Book Fiesta," by Pat Mora.
Elementary classrooms are especially welcome to attend the event, and educators may use this resource list to prepare their students.
"Save the Library / Rescate la Biblioteca" escape room game: If you haven't played a virtual escape room, you are in for some fun, and a chance to save the Library. Young readers are invited to complete a virtual escape room – answering questions about library resources – in order to foil the Agents of Misinformation, who have locked up the Library and wreaked havoc.
Access the Escape Room in English at this link. It's also available, as "Rescate la Biblioteca," in Spanish. Once you complete the mission, stop by the South Park Branch to pick up a free book while supplies last.
The Seattle Public Library celebrates Día in partnership with King County Library System, which is hosting a story time with Univision's Jaime Mendez on April 30; and Sno-Isle Libraries.
