Antonio Nocera's Pinocchio

Italian artist Antonio Nocera has found his lifelong muse in Pinocchio, the mysterious marionette from the famous children's classic tale. An exhibition of his artworks featuring Pinocchio and inspired by metaphors from the namesake book is on display at the Oblong Contemporary Gallery in Bluewaters Island, Dubai, till January 31st, 2022. Titled The Adventures of Pinocchio, the artist has created a series of paintings, sculptures and mixed media canvases using sand, sawdust and glass.

In the story, the young Pinocchio had said to a wise cricket, "I shall be sent to school and shall be made to study, either by love or by force. To tell you in confidence, I have no wish to learn; it is much more amusing to run after butterflies, or to climb trees and to take young birds out of their nests." So, butterfly and fairies can be seen in most of Antonio's works as he feels they represent freedom and spiritual change in the world.

The artworks strike a nostalgic note in viewers even as the vibrant hues and carefree butterflies invoke a sense of joy and bliss. The wooden-nosed Pinocchio has had a strong inspiration over Antonio's life. Every time he re-visits the story, he says, he finds a new perspective, which is why the figure of Pinocchio has been prevalent in Antonio's work for over two decades.

It was in 2002 that Antonio illustrated a book -- The Adventures of Pinocchio, followed by the exhibition -- Pinocchio et la Lune, at Paris Municipality and then at the European Parliament in Brussels. He has continued to collaborate with the Carlo Collodi National Foundation for the past 20 years. Collodi is the famous creator and author of Pinocchio.
